I know several people who probably have multiple pairs of shoes costing that much or more. Shoes are like cars, they can be as cheap or expensive asyou want, coming to baffling array of styles, and those who are not into them have a hard time understanding the tendencies of those who are.

A bit further in the article, we see that resellers are selling for around $4,000.
I was pretty paranoid about keeping my white Stan Smiths clean - I don’t think I could wear sneakers like that without going insane (and yes, I know that these will just end up being unworn collectors items).

The only kids that want these, can’t afford them.

Shoe ‘collectors’ ??? You collect baseball cards. You collect Hot Wheels. You collect sculpture. But shoes?
Fuck me running.

What kind of dumbass spends $720+ on a single pair of shoes?

I definitely don’t understand shoe obsession/collecting but once I put it into the same mindset as any other collection (cars, stamps, coins, etc) it made more sense.

Meh, I have quite a bit more than $700 worth of adornment sitting on my ring finger most days. I don’t think shoes are a remarkably dumb expenditure. To each their own.

I’ve got a friend who used to collect Jordans. Never wore 85% of them.

I’ve got a Tag Heuer on my wrist, doesn’t make $700 shoes any more sensical.

Not necessarily, we can’t wear any rings in the plants I work at, and I definitely don’t wear any of my more valuable heirloom jewelry on a daily basis. Plenty of people also drop well over $1000 on a dress that only gets worn on one day, not to mention tailoring, undergarments, special occasion shoes, and more jewelry. I know people who spend more on their bicycles than I did on my last motorcycle.

Shoes are more sensible than watches as far as the hierarchy of needs is concerned. But whatever floats your boat!

This from a company who still has contracters in Vietnam whose workers work in deplorable conditions to make shoes that are nowhere near worth what we have to pay for them. I’m sorry, but fuck Nike. Actually no, not sorry. Phil Knight is a garbage human being.

Nobody’s buying these for their kid to wear to school or for their arch support. They’re a collector’s item pure and simple.

That is exactly the sort of thinking a non-car person uses when they look at anybody with a car costing six or seven figures.

Paying $700 for some shoes I can see, maybe some handmade Italian leather dress shoes, but not some Nikes.

Your rings will far outlast a pair of Nikes and you can hand them to family members as heirlooms. I would argue not so with a pair of Nikes.

It’s just frustrating that in 2016 companies can still get away with bs like that. I’ve only owned a few pairs of Nike shoes and none of them were particularly comfortable. If they’re like any other Nike shoe, they’ll be falling apart in a year or less even with light use.

There are dedicated web forums to sneakers and the buying and selling of same. Out of production sneakers that are in high demand can go for ludicrous prices.
